Mineral Exploration in Azad Kashmir: What Satellite Data Reveals About an Overlooked Region
Everyone talks about Reko Diq. Everyone talks about Saindak. Nobody talks about Azad Kashmir.
And honestly, that's been bugging me for a while. I run GeoMine AI, I own 15 mines in Gilgit Baltistan, and the number of serious mineral exploration reports I've seen for AJK in the last decade? Maybe 8. Compare that to the 200+ studies floating around for Balochistan and you start to understand the gap.
So we pointed our satellites at Azad Kashmir. Sentinel-2, ASTER, SAR, SRTM DEM — the full stack. What came back was interesting enough that I'm writing this post instead of doing my Sunday paperwork.
The Geology Nobody Bothered Mapping Properly
AJK sits on a geological collision zone. The Indian Plate is grinding into the Eurasian Plate, and that tectonic mess is exactly the kind of setup that concentrates minerals. Thrust faults. Metamorphic belts. Intrusive bodies pushing up through sedimentary cover. This is textbook mineralization territory.
The Geological Survey of Pakistan did some regional mapping in the 1970s and 80s. Bits of it are solid. Most of it is 1:250,000 scale, which for a mining decision is basically useless — you can't drill on a map where 1 centimeter equals 2.5 kilometers.
Here's the thing. When we ran breeze geo mineral analysis workflows across the Neelum Valley, Jhelum Valley, and the Bagh-Haveli belt, the ASTER data lit up in places nobody has a lease on. Not one active exploration permit within 12 kilometers of some of the strongest alteration signatures.
That's not a small thing. That's a market inefficiency.
What the Satellites Are Actually Showing
Let me get specific because vague blog posts annoy me as much as they probably annoy you.
Neelum Valley — ruby and corundum belt. Everyone knows about Nangimali ruby. Fewer people know that the same metamorphic marble host rock extends for roughly 47 kilometers along strike, most of it never systematically sampled. Sentinel-2 band ratios (specifically the 4/2 and 6/5 ratios we use for carbonate mapping) show the marble unit continuing well past the known deposits. SRTM slope analysis tells us where erosion has exposed fresh rock versus where it's buried under scree.
Kotli district — copper and iron indicators. ASTER SWIR data picked up chlorite and epidote alteration signatures across a stretch north of Kotli town. These are the pathfinder minerals you'd expect around a copper porphyry or skarn system. I'm not saying there's a Reko Diq under Kotli. I am saying the spectral signature is real and it's untested.
Bagh and Haveli — marble and granite. This one is obvious to anyone who's driven through the area. But the satellite data helps you find the good marble — the pure calcite blocks without heavy iron staining or fracturing. We mapped roughly 340 square kilometers of high-quality dimension stone potential. Most of it is not currently being quarried.
Muzaffarabad-Hattian belt — base metals. SAR interferometry showed us structural features (fault intersections, mostly) that aren't on any published geological map. Fault intersections are where fluids move, and where fluids move, metals concentrate.
Why AJK Got Ignored
A few reasons, and none of them are geological.
One, the 2005 earthquake. It set the region back years and understandably nobody was thinking about mining exploration when they were rebuilding schools.
Two, the leasing framework in AJK is different from Punjab, KPK, or Balochistan. The AJK government has its own mineral rules, and until fairly recently the process was slow enough that most serious explorers just went elsewhere.
Three — and this is the honest one — the perception of security and access. Some of it fair, most of it outdated. I've been to Neelum Valley three times in the last year. It's fine. The roads are better than half of Gilgit Baltistan.
Four, there's just no data culture. Nobody publishes. Nobody shares. If you want to know what's under the ground in AJK, you either spend two years walking it or you look from space.
We chose space.
What This Means If You're Thinking About AJK
Look, I'm not going to pretend geo mining in Azad Kashmir is easy. The terrain is steep. The infrastructure is thin. Winter shuts down access to a lot of the higher-elevation targets for four months of the year.
But the AJK mineral deposits picture is genuinely underexplored in a way that Balochistan and KPK simply aren't anymore. If you're an investor or a mining company that missed the early wave on copper in Chagai, this is the kind of region where you can still get in before the leases get crowded.
A few practical things I'd tell anyone looking at mining Azad Kashmir seriously:
- Start with satellite before you send a single geologist. A proper geomine remote sensing study on 500 sq km costs less than one week of field crew time and narrows your targets by 80-90%.
- Talk to the AJK Directorate of Mines and Minerals early. The process works, it's just paperwork-heavy.
- Don't assume what worked in Gilgit works here. Different host rocks, different structural style, different weathering profile.
- Budget for access. A helicopter day in Neelum can save you a week of mule trekking, and sometimes that math actually works out cheaper.
I used to think AJK was mostly a marble and gemstone story. After looking at 18 months of multi-spectral data across the region, I've changed my mind. The base metal potential is real. The structural setups for hydrothermal systems are there. Someone's going to figure this out in the next 5 years.
