Punjab Mineral Potential: What Satellite Intelligence Reveals About Salt Range and Beyond

Everyone talks about Balochistan. Reko Diq this, Saindak that.

Meanwhile, Punjab is sitting on billions of tonnes of rock salt, gypsum, limestone, coal, dolomite, silica sand, fireclay, and even traces of copper and uranium — and nobody outside the Punjab Mineral Development Corporation seems to be paying attention. I got this wrong at first too. When we started building GeoMine AI, I assumed the interesting stuff was all up north in Gilgit Baltistan (where I personally own 15 mines) or in the Chagai belt. Then we ran our first Sentinel-2 mineral analysis over the Salt Range and I honestly had to sit back for a minute.

The hydroxyl anomalies over the Khewra-Warcha stretch alone lit up like a Christmas tree.

What The Salt Range Actually Looks Like From 786 km Up

Salt Range is roughly 300 km long, running from Jhelum through Chakwal, Khushab, and into Mianwali. Most of what's been mined here — Khewra, Kalabagh, Warcha, Jatta — was found the old way. Somebody's grandfather noticed a salt spring. Somebody else dug. British engineers surveyed it in 1872. And that's basically the map we've been using for 150 years.

Satellite intelligence changes that math completely.

When we process ASTER SWIR bands over the Salt Range, gypsum and anhydrite show up with a very specific spectral signature around 1.75 and 2.2 micrometres. Limestone gives us a clean carbonate absorption near 2.33. Rock salt itself is trickier (halite has weak diagnostic features in VNIR-SWIR) but the alteration halos around salt domes — the clay minerals, the iron staining, the sulfate crusts — those are dead giveaways. Our breeze geo mineral analysis pipeline picks these up in about 40 minutes over an area that would take a field team three weeks to walk.

And here's what surprised me. We flagged 23 anomaly zones outside the currently licensed mining blocks in Chakwal district. Twenty-three. Some of these are almost certainly extensions of known deposits. Some are probably nothing. But a few — particularly two clusters near Choa Saidan Shah — have the same spectral fingerprint as the producing Khewra section.

That's not a small finding.

Beyond Salt: What Else Punjab Is Hiding

People forget Punjab has coal. Not great coal, but the Makerwal and Kalabagh fields have been producing since the 1880s. SRTM DEM combined with SAR data lets us map the structural controls — the anticlines, the fault traces — that determine where the coal seams thicken and where they pinch out. For a mine owner deciding whether to extend an adit east or west, that's the difference between a profitable quarter and bankruptcy.

Then there's the stuff nobody mentions at investment conferences.

Silica sand near Daud Khel — glass grade, according to old GSP reports. Fireclay in the Nowshera-Kohat overlap that spills into western Punjab. Dolomite ridges in the Kala Chitta range that could feed a serious refractory industry if anyone bothered to develop them. Marble and decorative stone deposits scattered through the Mianwali-Kalabagh corridor that we've mapped with sub-10-metre resolution.

And copper. Yes, in Punjab.

Trace copper mineralisation has been reported near the Kirana Hills — those weird ancient volcanic outcrops sticking out of the plains near Sargodha and Shahkot. These are Precambrian rocks, roughly 870 million years old, and they're geologically related to some of the copper-bearing formations in Rajasthan. Nobody has done serious modern exploration there. Look, I'm not saying there's a Reko Diq under Sargodha. I'm saying we don't actually know, and satellite data suggests it's worth finding out.

Why Punjab Gets Ignored (And Why That's About To Change)

Here's the thing. Punjab's mineral sector suffers from a perception problem. It's the agricultural province. It's the industrial heartland. Minerals feel like something that happens somewhere else — in KP, in Balochistan, in the northern areas.

But Punjab has three things going for it that Balochistan doesn't. Roads. Power. And a mining department that actually returns phone calls.

When we talk to investors about geo mining opportunities in Punjab, the pitch is simple. You can truck material to Lahore or Karachi without needing a Frontier Corps escort. You can plug a crusher into the grid without building your own 5 MW diesel plant. Your workers actually show up because their families live 90 minutes away.

The economics are just cleaner.

What's been missing is targeting. Where exactly do you drill? Which 200-hectare block do you apply a lease for? Which anomaly is worth a $180,000 exploration budget and which one is a mirage caused by iron-stained soil? That's the gap Salt Range mining satellite work fills. A proper geomines report — combining Sentinel-2 multispectral, ASTER thermal, Sentinel-1 SAR for structural mapping, and SRTM for terrain — costs a fraction of one field season and tells you where to point that field season when you do run it.

We're not replacing geologists. I want to be very clear about that. The best workflow I've seen still ends with a human boot on a human outcrop, hammer in hand, cracking rock. Satellites just tell you which outcrop to walk to.

So when someone asks me what the next five years of Punjab mineral exploration looks like, I tell them this: the Salt Range gets re-mapped properly for the first time since the British left. The Kirana Hills get their first serious copper survey. Silica sand and dolomite move from cottage-industry status to actual industrial supply chains. And somewhere in Chakwal or Mianwali, someone with a small exploration licence and a $500 GeoMine AI report finds something their grandfather walked past a hundred times.

Why wouldn't you at least look?
